SC10 Iceland Self Driven Tour

DAY 1 – Arrive Keflavik – Reykjavik

Pick up your car at the international airport in Keflavik before driving through the lunar landscape of the Reykjanes peninsula to your accommodation in downtown Reykjavik. After settling in at your hotel in Reykjavik, make the most of your proximity to the vibrant city centre, and discover the multitude of museums, galleries, restaurants, and bars on offer.

Overnight at Reykjavik.

DAY 2 – Golden Circle tour (Thingvellir National park, Geyser, Gullfoss)

On day two after breakfast proceed to some of the best-known natural phenomena in Iceland via the sightseeing route known as the Golden Circle. The first stop is Þingvellir National Park. Here, you can walk along the rift valley of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, all the while exploring an area which plays a huge role in Iceland’s heritage; parliament was founded here in 930 AD, and it is also where Iceland converted to Christianity and declared its independence from Denmark. The geothermal valley of Haukadalur is the next stop, where you can see the geysers Strokkur and Geysir, amongst many bubbling hostrokkur-503-1t springs. Strokkur puts on an unforgettable display every 10 minutes or so, erupting to heights that exceed 20 m (66 ft). Just a few kilometers away is Iceland’s most popular attraction, the mighty waterfall of Gullfoss. A pathway takes you to the water’s edge, where you can get a  real sense of the incredible power of these enormous falls. From Gullfoss, those with a good sense of adventure can jump on an snowmobiling tour on Langjokull glacier. Another popular sight of the area is the volcanic crater Kerid, which is well worth a visit before continuing to the Capital. The rocks of this crater are coloured rusty red and fiery orange, and the water that permanently sits within its basin is an incredible, vivid blue. The colour contrast, especially when you add green-growing moss, is simply stunning. Overnight at Reykjavik.

DAY 3 – Reykjavik – Akureyri

Today, continue to the charming ‘capital of the north’, Spend the day enjoying Akureyri, a charismatic town hosting plenty of unique shops and museums. En-route photo stop at Turf farm houses at Glaumbaer Museum (from outside) Evening enjoy a stroll and walking orientation tour of Akureyri town covering the Church, Fjord waterfront, Akureyri Botanical garden and old town pedestrian street. spend the rest of the day at leisure. Overnight at Akureyri.

DAY 4 – Lake Myvatn Area

Move forward to the renowned Lake Myvatn. Your first stop The Godafoss waterfall is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland. The water of the river Skjalfandafljot falls from a height of 12 meters over a width of 30 meters. The Lake Myvatn area is simply stunning. It is known for its geothermal landscapes, including the Namaskarð Pass, the Skutustadagigar pseudo-craters, the Dimmuborgir lava formations and Mt. Krafla, one of Iceland’s most iconic volcanoes. Later on, visit Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe. Later visit the beautiful Myvatn nature baths for a relaxing geothermal bath in a stunning natural lagoon. Later go back to Akureyri, where you will spend the night. Overnight at Akureyri.

DAY 5 – Akureyri – Into the Glacier – Borgarnes

On day 5, explore West Iceland with its diverse attractions, including the Icelandic Settlement Centre in Borgarnes, which details the history of the settlement of our land, and Deildartunguhver, the hot spring with the highest flow in Europe. Further along, be sure to visit the captivating Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls. History buffs may also enjoy a detour to Snorrastofa, the medieval research institute in Reykholt, where Iceland’s most famous Viking poet, politician, and historian, Snorri Sturluson, wrote the saga Heimskringla in the 13th century. He is also the author of the bible of old Norse mythology, the Edda. Visit a unique and remote man-made ice cave in Langjokull, one of Iceland’s largest and most spectacular glaciers. Arrive at Husafell area with stops at Europe’s most powerful hot spring Deildartunguhver and the beautiful Hraunfossar lava waterfalls. After a lunch break in Husafell, we head on up to Langjokull, partly in a specially modified glacier vehicle (Monster Truck). It will take us almost to the top of the glacier, where we enter the magnificent cave. Going Into the glacier is an unforgettable trip which takes place in one of the world’s greatest wilderness. Overnight in Borgarnes Area.

DAY 6 – Borgarnes – Snaefellsnes Peninsula – Lava Cave

On day 6 experience The Snaefellsnes peninsula in West Iceland is almost a miniature version of the island. In addition to its characteristic Snefellsjokull glacier, there are black sandy beaches, bird cliffs, spectacular mountains and volcanic craters. On this tour, we will, for example, stop at the small fishing village Arnarstapi, the ancient fishing village Hellnar, visit Djupalonssandur beach and pass by the iconic Kirkjufell mountain. The stunning landscape of the peninsula has captured the imagination of people all over the world, ever since Jules Verne wrote the famous science fiction novel “Journey to the Centre of the Earth” but the journey begins at Snaefellsjokull glacier. The area all around the glacier contains hundreds of lava tubes, which makes the area special for those interested in caves. We start our next adventure by visiting Vatnshellir Cave. Tour guides lead visitors down a subterranean, spiral staircase to explore this ancient lava tube. Exploring Vatnshellir cave is truly amazing and unforgettable experience. This 8000-year-old lava tube reaches over 200 meters and goes 35 meters below the surface. Overnight in Borgarnes Area.

DAY 7 – Borgarnes – Seljalandsfoss – Skogafoss – Black Sand Beach - Vik

After breakfast you move onto the Ring Road to the South. You will see Seljalandsfoss waterfall, which you can walk all the way around for some great photos behind its curtain of water. A little further down the road is the mesmerising and mightily powerful Skogafoss waterfall, a roaring beast with a 60 m (197 ft) drop and a width nearly half its height. After the thrilling experiance move along the coast near the village Vik, take a slight detour to stop and admire the black volcanic beach Reynisfjara, the dramatic Dyrholaey rock arch and the eerie Reynisdrangar sea stacks. Be very careful of the ocean, however, as the waves along this stretch of coast are notoriously unpredictable and dangerous―all part of the allure of travelling in Iceland.  At the end of your first-rate third day, you’ll spend the night in Vik. Overnight at Vik.

DAY 8 – Vik – Skaftafell National park – Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon – Diamond Beach - Vik

On day eight, get ready to head to a Nature Reserve within the greater Vatnajokull National Park. Continuing, you’ll find yourself by one of Iceland’s most famous and dazzling attractions, the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon. Even from the shore, however, the lagoon is stunning, and you have a good chance to see seals playing amongst the ice. After you have enjoyed the lagoon, take the short walk to the nearby Diamond Beach, where many ice-flows wash up on the shore and sparkle like gemstones in the sun. Later return to Vik, and spend the night in Vik.Overnight at Vik.

DAY 9 – Vik – Blue Lagoon bath – Reykjavik.

Today check out from Vik & we will be proceeding towards Reykjavik. Before that, in the day fit in one last fantastic Icelandic experience―a revitalizing visit to the world-famous Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. It is a great way to end your Icelandic adventure. The geothermal water is rich in minerals, giving it a turquoise glow, as well as many reputed health properties for your skin and soul. Later on your own, explore the highlights of the history and culture of Reykjavík, Iceland’s beautiful capital. Important places of Reykjavik, includes the famous Hallgrimskirkja church, named after the 17th-century poet and clergyman Hallgrimur Petursson. It is the highest church in Iceland at 74,5 meters high (244 ft.) and it took 41 years to build. Construction began in 1945 and didn’t end until 1986. It additionally houses the largest church organ in Iceland; it has 5275 pipes, is 15 meters high and weighs 25 tons. Other stops are, for example, Hofdi, where the US President Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev President of the Soviet Union met to end the Cold War, and Bessastadir, the official residence of the Icelandic president located at the beautiful Alftanes peninsula. Bessastadir was first settled in the year 1000 and has since then been an important place in Iceland. Snorri Sturluson, the author of Snorra-Edda, lived there in the 13th century and later on it became a Royal Fortress and the residence of the Norse King’s highest ranking officers and officials living in Iceland. The beautiful Harpa concert hall and conference centre in downtown Reykjavik, which was designed by the Danish firm Henning Larsen Architects in co-operation with Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. This is the essential introduction to Iceland‘s capital! Alternatively, you can explore the many geological wonders of the Reykjanes peninsula, or simply indulge in some last-minute shopping in Reykjavik. Overnight in Reykjavik.

DAY 10 – Airport Drop off

Today we proceed towards Airport to catch return flight back home after dropping the car at the airport. Have a safe journey home.
